It's that time of year again when things are about to get real busy in the kitchen. The holidays usher in an endless stream of grocery bags being hauled into the kitchen, most filled with recognizable favorites of food-to-be. Tradition may dictate turkey, mashed potatoes, and gravy to be on the table come dinnertime, but that doesn't mean a soon-to-be classic can't get thrown in the mix.

Watching a cooking video and following along with the steps is a natural use for tablets and mobile devices. The Williams-Sonoma Smart Tools Bluetooth Speaker ($149.95) offers an easy way to keep up while learning some new moves. Part of a set that also consists of a stand and splash screen (everything is also sold separately), the remote speaker can be moved about the kitchen or placed securely underneath the matching stand.

Measuring 2 inches tall with a diameter of 4.75 inches, the 12.5-ounce speaker is designed for the kitchen, but could be used anywhere. It comes with a line-in port for listening to music as well as two USB ports for charging devices. For those times that a cooking video doesn't do the trick, the integrated microphone lets home chefs cook and talk at the same time. For many, kitchen decor is a work in progress. Nothing wrong with that; in fact, it makes sense considering the room in question. Baking can be a furious endeavor. Throw a cook into a fully stocked kitchen with a set of measuring tools and anything can happen. That doesn't mean everything has to happen, though. Any chef could live without the spills and the messes that inevitably occur from trying to use something that was designed for another purpose. Worse yet is when a commonly used item gets in the way.

Baking scales, like any other piece of kitchen equipment, are only as useful as far as they can be used. Sounds simple enough, but all too often utility is lost due to some overlooked feature. Designed to be used with oversize mixing bowls, as well as everything in between, the Caso Baking Scale gives cooks an eye-level view as to what is going on.

A display that allows you to clearly see the readout may seem like an unwieldy thing to store, but the scale solves this problem by folding for storage. In the closed position, the legs that serve to elevate the display panel fold flat, giving the scale overall dimensions of 10.5 inches by 6.5 inches with a height of only 0.75 inch. For a food that has been around in one form or another for thousands of years, pasta sure has aged well. From noodles in ancient China to lasagna at the Italian restaurant down the street, the starchy standard has been around the block, so to say. It is safe to say that pasta is old. But that doesn't mean it cannot still have fun.

The Viante Pasta Extruder offers not only an easy way to make fresh pasta at home, but it does so with a bit of fun. Similar to the iconic Play-Doh Fun Factory in that the device extrudes long, strands of material that eventually end up in the mouth. (Stop eating the Play-Doh, kids.)
