KitchenAid toaster raises and lowers the bar (in a good way)

Toasters often get overlooked in the kitchen. Counter space, being the limited creature that it is, has room for only so many appliances. While this may bode well for strong multitaskers like toaster ovens, regular toasters often get left out in the cold. (Or at least left in the back of the cupboard.)

The KitchenAid Pro Line Toaster ($299) aims to elevate the once-grand appliance back out from under the counter. Sensing that there is only one direction to go but up, the toaster rises to new heights by incorporating a motorized lifting mechanism. Not afraid to dunk below the surface, the gadget also senses when bread is placed in the slots and automatically lowers the slices to initiate toasting.

Despite their diminishing numbers, or perhaps because of it, higher-end features in toasters have a market. Here, the body features heavy-duty die-cast aluminum construction and, of course, the slots are wide enough for thick-sliced breads or bagels. A defrost function is helpful for dealing with frozen goods, while an LED timer displays toasting progress. Additionally (and this is perhaps the neatest feature of all), the toaster has a keep-warm setting that automatically kicks in after the bread has been toasted, keeping the item butter-ready for up to 3 minutes -- because sometimes in the rush of the morning, even the toast itself can get overlooked.

Kenwood Cooking Chef now available in the U.S.

If you can think it, the Kenwood Cooking Chef can probably cook it or prep it.

Way back in October 2009, I wrote about the Kenwood Cooking Chef. The device has finally made it to the U.S. What sort of gadget is this machine that has taken so long to grace our shores? Well, the answer appears to be more of what it isn't as opposed to what it is.

Combining a stand mixer with an induction plate, the multitasking appliance carves out a new niche on the countertop. By allowing chefs to cook directly in the work bowl, the Kenwood Cooking Chef offers a new way to operate in the kitchen.

The highly precise induction heating element has a range of 68 degrees Fahrenheit to 284 degrees Fahrenheit and is designed to be put to use while the appliance is in use. The end result is that soup, pasta, rice dishes and more can be simultaneously cooked and mixed at the same time. But that is only the start.

In addition to the accessories one would expect to find with a stand mixer (like a dough hook, whisk, and stirring tool), the appliance also comes with attachments allowing it to be used as a blender and a food processor. The one appliance can literally handle everything from making soup to chopping nuts.

Has it been worth the wait? Well, that depends. At a price of just about two grand, this overachieving appliance is pretty much designed for the person who has everything. Then again, for the person who has everything, maybe all they need is an appliance that actually does everything. Either way, perhaps it's best to check back in another three years to see if it has become a little more affordable.

Eating out at a restaurant can sometimes seem like a magical experience. But the coordinated dance between the back of the house and the front of the house is one that relies on timing, skill, and experience. However, all that being said, there is still an element of surprise when a plate of eggs, hash browns, and bacon gets set down in front of you in a matter of mere minutes. Yet this feat happens in diners across the country countless times a day.

Replicating that experience at home is not necessarily the impossible task it may seem to be. Behind the scenes at a diner -- it is usually safe to say -- there is not an army of wizards and leprechauns making magic. However, the short-order chef does have one piece of equipment at his or her disposal that helps to facilitate the magic: the flat-top griddle.

Most of us do not have the means to outfit the home kitchen with an additional big piece of equipment. We can, however, add the Calphalon Unison Nonstick Short Order Griddle.
